River Gangaa meets River Yamuna at this place in Prayaag City. It is also believed that the mythological River Saraswathi also meets here, so this place is called THRIVENI SANGAM. THRI - THREE, VENI - RIVER, SANGAM - MEETING POINT. One can see the different colours of the water of Gangaa and Yamuna, coming from different directions and the third colour of the water, after meeting.
There are numerous THRIVENI SANGAMs in India, one more being at Somnath, Gujarat. The THRIVENI SANGAM is considered holy and last rites of departed souls are performed at various THRIVENI SANGAMS. This SANGAM, called Prayag ( Allahabad ), is located in state of Uttar Pradesh, INDIA.
Added info by R.Isai Subramanian (TN):- One can actually see the mixing of two rivers. I stood at the place where they mix. One shoulder touching one river which is green and cold, the other shoulder touching the other river which is brown and warm. What a feeling. One shoulder cold and the other warm. River Saraswati is said to be an underground river mixing from the bottom of the ground.
There is also a spiritual interpretation of the Triveni Sangam. Three nerve columns, Ira (Ida), Pingala and Sushumna are compared with the three rivers. Ira flows right of the spinal chord, compared with Ganga; pingala left of spinal chord, compared with Yamuna and Sushumna, inside the centre of the spinal chord, compared with Saraswati. When we breath through right nostril, the Ira Nadi (nerve) flow becomes active and when we breath through left nostril, the Pingala Nadi (nerve) becomes active. Normally the power of Sushumna is dormant, thus Saraswati is said to flow underground. But at the time of Kundalini Jagaran, Sushumna current becomes most prominent and breath flows through both nostrils equally.

Varanasi (Sanskrit: वाराणसी Vārāṇasī), also known as Benares (Hindi: बनारस Banāras, Urdu: بنارس), or Kashi (Hindi: काशी (info) Kāśī), is a city considered holy by Hindus, Buddhists & Jains, situated on the banks of the river Ganges (Ganga) in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, dating back thousands of years and contemporaneous with the Sumer civilisation. The city is called Kashi, "the luminous" in the Rigveda. It is often also referred to as "city of temples and learning."
The culture of Varanasi is deeply associated with the river Ganges and the river's religious importance. The city has been a cultural and religious center in northern India for thousands of years. Varanasi has its own style of classical Hindustani music, and has produced prominent philosophers, poets, writers and musicians in Indian history, including Kabir, Ravi Das, Munshi Premchand, Jaishankar Prasad, Acharya Ram Chandra Shukla, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Hariprasad Chaurasia and Ustad Bismillah Khan. Varanasi is the home of Banaras Hindu University. Tulsidas wrote his Ramcharitmanas here, and Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath near Kashi. The language spoken in Varanasi is Kashika Bhojpuri which is closely related to Hindi.
